Artist Statement

Life’s relentless current constantly pushes and pulls us – sometimes thrusting us forward, sometimes drawing us back.  At times, we are battered, crushed against the rocks and swept wildly along an unknown path.  This flow of energy, constricted when passing through a narrow inlet, escapes with even greater force and effect.  The current drives us onward, inundating us with more and more influences, channeling our feelings past its rough and rocky origins, into new paths of release, coming out calmer, softer, and ultimately more energized.

My work explores the aspect of nature that constantly sets its elements against each other.  By peering beneath the surface, you can glimpse the conflict of water against shell and stone, the swirling collisions of earth’s elements encountering one another.  The conflict is hypnotic; the conflict is inspirational – molding our destiny.  Standing at the edge, we gaze, explore and embrace the metaphor.

Bio

Flo Vazquez had several careers before choosing to pursue her artistic passion professionally in 1998.  Educated in the biological sciences, much of her life was spent peering through a microscope, analyzing data, looking at a world that many never see. Glass, as a medium, challenges technically yet allows creative expression and, thus, satisfies both the scientific and artistic aspects of her nature. She resides in Austin, TX and maintains her studio within East by South East Studios.
